Mariamar
is an album by jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp recorded in Rome, Italy on October
16, 1975 and released on the Horo label. Beautiful only italian LP, deep jazz
with a soul feel.
A
very nice issue of a 1976 Italian LP of Archie Shepp with local and Brazilian
musicians spinning out lush, soulful jazz tunes. Shepp is of course a master of
many styles of jazz, and here he focuses on melodic lyrical ballads with a
tight, piano-less sextet. Shepp’s playing is soulful and generous, giving
plenty of room for solos from his band. Guitarist Irio de Paula’s playing
shines throughout, providing some beautiful chord comping that makes me think
of Wes Montgomery, especially backing Shepp’s tenor sax on a duo of “Mariamar”
and "Shepp's Mood". Frankly, I was surprised at how enjoyable this
has been. I assumed it would be worth one listen and then on to sell at End of
an Ear records, but this goes into my permanent and ever growing Archie Shepp
collection.
Note:
Special
treatment of sound processing in the Studio-A of Radio Corona.
Enjoy!
If
you find it, buy this album!

ReplyDeleteThe Horo label issued some great dates around this time! "Jazz Confronto 27" an LP with two side-long tracks, was recorded some days earlier (Sept. 29) with a different, all-American line-up (Shepp, Greenlee, Burrell, Williams, Harris). Confusingly, there is yet a third album, "Libya", which has the two tracks from "Jazz Confronto 27", another track from the same session, plus one track ('Tropical') from this Mariamar session. I have a lossless download and can offer a link in the comments here if anyone is interested.
ReplyDeleteHi nikos,
Deletevery generous offer. I have the LP "Libya", but the album "Jazz Confronto 27" really I would like to hear.
Regards.
Vitko, after posting the comment, I looked up the text file that comes with the download, and now I am more confused than ever! It seems that Libya is an unofficial reissue of Jazz Confronto 27. The track "Tropical" is, I think, derived from a cd reissue of Mariamar. At any rate, these are the tracks I have:
ReplyDeletefrom the 'Italian'-group (Mariamar) session 28.9.1975:
Mariamar
Tres Ideias
The Magic
Shepp's Mood
Body & Soul
Tropical
From the US-group (Libya) session 16.10.1975:
Lybia
My Heart Cries Out To Africa
Dogon
Tell me which tracks you need.
Well, yes, it is all jumbled together, what to do ...?... If you can, tracks "Body & Soul" and "Tropical".... in any case, thank you to the goodwill.
ReplyDeleteCheers nikos.
Here are the extra tracks from the Mariamar session:

nikos - I just stumbled upon this posting of Shepp's Mariamar. Having been blown away, I tried to download the extra tracks you were kind enough to post. Unfortunately, the link has expired. Any chance you could re-up the extra tracks? It would be much appreciated.
DeleteAfter searching the internet, I find that there's a fourth (!) album from these Horo sessions, called Body and Soul, which has "Tropical" from Miaramar, "Dogon" from Libya, and the "Body & Soul" which was not on any of the others!
ReplyDeleteAn old favorite, thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Been wanting to hear this one for awhile.
ReplyDeleteThanks Vitko for the Upgrade!
ReplyDeleteVitko, thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks!!
ReplyDeletethanks for Mariamar, xtra traks too...!!
ReplyDeleteHere is the situation: A rather dull Sunday evening. I noticed the pile of CDs made from your previous rips, waiting for an occasion, for more than a quick listen. I ended up with Shepps Mariamar album. Right time, right mood. I played the album twice from start to finish. Thank you, dear Vitko, for a really enjoyable listening on a nice and pleasant sunday evening.

Better than the wannabe-official CD release(s) which are indeed of very dubious origin. That holds true for any of the Atomic CDs that were formerly issued in some permutation as LPs on Horo. Even the legitimacy of the original Horo releases isn't quite established, as Sinesio was an Italian radio producer who issued the sessions he produced for radio on his Horo label as a non-sanctioned "night" job. At least it was not officially approved by RAI. Also, I have heard the musicians never saw a dime from him. Anyway, an good Shepp LP, regardless of whether it ever was a legitimate release. Thanks, Vitko!
